What I Do In The Heat Of A Moment Of Anxiety

It doesn't matter how much list making, planning, organizing, and preparing I do, there will always be days when the world around us just feels like too much. When the expectations become overwhelming and the anxiety real. If you can relate, I implore you to read on.

I have worked for years, trying different strategies, techniques, therapies, medications, you-name-it to get my anxiety under control. I am at a place now where I can say honestly that it is manageable most of the time. There are numerous things that I think help me personally (working out, taking control of my health, mediation, time management strategies, etc), but one thing that I share with my clients is my “mantra”.

A mantra is something that you say to yourself (either in your head or aloud). It is a personal pep talk!! And I have found it extremely helpful when I am feeling overwhelmed. It is very directive and reassuring. It is a great reminder for me that I don't’ have to have it all figured out right now, just what is immediately next.

I start with three deep breaths. These breaths quiet my mind just enough to be able to tune the world out to to hear myself.

“Do the next right thing.

Take one next step-

It doesn’t matter how small.

Now don’t look back.”

One thing that this year has taught us is that we don't have to have it ALL figured out at any given point...even when we do something unexpected comes into play and throws off course. Plans may have to change, rules bent and broken, priorities shifted. Those circumstances can be very scary for someone who suffers from anxiety!

I'm here to remind you one more time YOU DO NOT have to figure it all out. When life becomes loud and crazy and the walls are closing in, just remind yourself to:

“Do the next right thing.

Take one next step-

It doesn’t matter how small.

Now don’t look back.”

Be proud that you're a tiny step further and you were a minute ago, breathe and do it again.
